Walking to the Amazon return counter at Whole Foods, a little girl interrupted my mental to-do list. Her thoughtful, round eyes locked with mine as she reached out with a pink rose. “Here, this is for you.” A simple smile, no explanation, just an unexpected gift of beauty.
I locked eyes right back with her, thanked her, and watched as she took a few steps to her mom.
I went about my return, wondering about the flower gift and why, with a full grocery store, she chose me.
We happened to exit the store at the same time. I heard her mom say, “Here you go, you’ve got one more.” The little girl’s head swiveled to take in her surroundings, choosing one more recipient.
I thanked the girl again, introduced myself and got her name, along with her mom’s. I asked why they were handing out flowers.
“Well, we tried passing out little Jesus toys, but a lot of people didn’t want them. So we decided we’d give away flowers.”
What a sweet, wise momma.
Giving her daughter an opportunity to increase love and smiles. To practice generosity.
As we said goodbye, I told the girl that I would keep my eyes open for someone else who might enjoy receiving a lovely pink rose.
And with the flower tucked into my shopping bag, I hopped into my car a little lighter and brighter.
And yet I also felt a tug at my heart, thinking of those people who felt too independent, angry, or bitter to accept a Jesus toy from the hands of a child.
Goodness, what they’ve missed.
Heavenly Father, like the sweet girl in Whole Foods, open our eyes to those who don’t know you, who have not yet received the gift of your Son. And if they’re not ready to receive Jesus, help us to share Your love in ways that simply point to You.
And as for that pink rose, I found a most deserving recipient.
Love you Mom!!
